Foreword

Both new and experienced faculty members are wondering how to manage today’s college students.  That is why Taking Back the Classroom:  Tips for the College Professor on Becoming a More Effective Teacher is a must read for all college professors.  It is a proactive primer on classroom management in higher education for the 21st Century.

The book is developed from a series of workshops on classroom management conducted by Dr. Delaney J. Kirk over many years.  It provides a 240-page toolbox filled with proven classroom management techniques that have been used successfully by faculty in all disciplines.

Taking Back the Classroom is divided into 12 chapters, each focusing on key issues such as what to do on the first day of class to establish your credibility, how to handle difficult and challenging students, and legal advice on sexual harassment in the classroom.  By adhering to Dr. Kirk’s advice, as well as suggestions from her colleagues and former workshop participants, college faculty can aggressively take charge of the classroom to create the best learning environments for their students.
