A Program Designed to
Support Tomorrow’s Leaders
The Certificate in Nonprofit Leadership and Administration is
intended to reach out to those potential leaders who are today doing the work
and providing day to day administration for their nonprofit organization. The
CNLA is appropriate for the person who has working experience in the nonprofit
sector and who is currently serving in a management/ leadership position, or a
person who has been identified as a potential candidate for a
management/leadership position.
The Certificate in Nonprofit Leadership and Administration is
integrated with other Drake certificate and degree programs that allow the
learner to further advance in their study. Following completion of the
Certificate in Nonprofit Leadership, an otherwise qualified person who is
admitted to the Drake University Master of Public Administration degree
program may reduce his/her credit hour requirement by three credit hours.
This
comprehensive curriculum is based on the study of models used by leading
programs in both certificate and graduate level programming across the nation.
It has also benefited by the experience of the leadership team guiding the
development of the program.
Three
major areas of competency are considered in the curriculum design:

The Certificate in Nonprofit Leadership and Administration is
comprehensive, requiring 80 contact hours. Also, the CNLA is cohort based.
A selected group of approximately 12 learners will begin and finish the program
as a team, creating a unique atmosphere that fosters additional valuable
learning beyond the typical mixed seminar setting.
Sessions will normally be held at the Drake University Campus and will be based
on a half-day format. The typical class day will begin at 9:00 AM and end at
1:00 PM. The day includes a program provided working lunch. The program will
begin in September and end in May.
Those who will be facilitating the sessions have unique practitioner, research
and/or teaching experience in their topic of specialization. Many currently
teach in Drake’s evening graduate programs and are experienced in creating a
learning atmosphere that is appropriate for professionals who seek to integrate
academic and experienced based learning applicable to their current nonprofit.
These above mentioned topics will be discussed on the following days at the
Drake Campus beginning in September of 2006 (9AM-1PM): Note - if you know you

The
substantive material associated with this program will be taught using a number
of traditional, non-traditional, experiential and case study techniques. It
will employ a methodology that is related to the empirical background of the
non-traditional learner—one who may be beyond the traditional college age, has
extensive work experience, and sundry personal, professional and job related
responsibilities.
Participants
will be part of a cohort, meaning the group will start and complete the program
together. This allows for continuity in class size, opportunity to build rapport
between facilitators and participants in the program, which supports a unique
team environment.
The base cost of tuition for this 80-hour program is $2,500 per admitted
participant. No other fees or charges for outside materials will be assessed.
Especially in today’s challenging economic environment, special support funding
is critical to enable those organizations that will benefit most from access to
this certificate program. Therefore, a scholarship support program has been
established to link supporters with nonprofit professionals enabling
participation in this program.
There is also a perceived benefit to the learner as he/she knows that an
outside organization is counting on a successful participation in the program.
The learner hopefully seeks to demonstrate that a good investment has been made
in their future as well as in the future of the community.
A $2,500 scholarship enables one candidate to pursue the program. The
sponsoring organization’s support will be acknowledged in official certificate
literature and on the Center for Professional Studies's supporting website.
A
representative from the sponsoring organization will also be invited to place
her/his signature on the official certificate document.
At
the conclusion of the program, participants who have successfully completed the
program will be awarded a Certificate in Nonprofit Leadership and
Administration from the Drake University Center for Professional Studies
at a graduation ceremony held on the Drake campus. All candidates and their
families, the nonprofits they serve, and the sponsoring organizations will be
invited to this special celebration.
