Bus 9: Business Horizons

Bus 9 is a two credit college course open to high school students in the ABI Business Horizons Program. Students who participate in Business Horizons and who would like to earn college credit may do so by writing a formal paper that springs from what they learned during the Business Horizons week. The guidelines for the paper and the suggested topics are given below.
Receiving College Credit for Business Horizons:
If you have been accepted into the Business Horizons program and are interested in earning college credit contact Mary Edrington in the College of Business and Public Administration at Drake; phone: (515) 271-3142. To earn the two college credits you are required to attend the sessions of Business Horizons during the week and to submit a formal written paper by August 1, two weeks after the program ends. No letter grade will be assigned for the course, rather performance will be judged on a credit/no credit (pass/fail) basis.The Goal of the Formal Paper:
Business Horizons is designed to introduce you to the exciting dynamics of the business world. (see the Business Horizons Mission Statement) You will learn about the creative ideas that start businesses, how to market a good or service, business strategy, and much more. You will also learn valuable lessons about teamwork, diversity, networking, and knowing yourself.The goal of the formal paper is for you to focus on one topic, describe what you learned, and tell why it is significant to you. By doing at good job at this task, you prove to the instructor of Business 9 that you gained something valuable from the week and that you can express it clearly in writing. This proof earns you the two college credits for Bus 9.
Guidelines for the Formal Paper
The formal paper is meant to be the expression of your reflections on some subject you learned about during the Business Horizons sessions. You have the freedom to be creative about the structure and contents of the paper within the following limitations.
1. The completed paper should be 6-10 pages, including the title page.
2. The paper should be typed and double-spaced.
3. Outside research is NOT required for the completion of this paper, however, if outside sources are used they should be referenced appropriately and a bibliography provided.
4. The paper should address a topic that was discussed during Business Horizons week, examples are on the attached page.
5. The paper should include information you learned and/or experiences you gained during the Business Horizons sessions.
6. The paper should be an example of your best formal writing.
7. The opening paragraph should explain why you chose the topic.
8. The closing paragraph(s) should describe the most significant thing you learned about the topic and/or how learning about this topic will help you in the future.
